Four Swans Vision goes to Stevenage F.C.

This Saturday 26th April 2014 we are off to Stevenage Football Club to hear them play Walsall.  Stevenage FC kindly donated 12 tickets for Four Swans Vision  Members to attend a match.

Members will be able to access the match via D.A.B. Digital radios. But there is nothing like the atmosphere you get at a live game - this is one thing you cannot hear on the TV or on the radio.

With thanks to Stevenage F.C. and Steve Parrianen for making this event possible.

  *********************************

Update:

Our Trip to Stevenage F.C. was a  last and enjoyed by all. Even our 3 Spurs fans were cheering their heads off  when Stevenage scored their goals!!!

A Massive Thank You to Steve Parrianen who asked Stevenage F.C. for the tickets, very kindly brought drinks & chocolate bars for everyone for half time and did a fantastic job of Commentating for the majority of our members who could not see at all or who have very limited vision.

Massive Thank You Stevenage Football Club for donating the tickets and a brilliant day out.

Press Release:

One year older and Four Swans wiser

Picture: Four Swans Vision VI (Visually Impaired) Sports Day, for VI people.

From Left to right:  Mayoress June Rowland, Mayor Eddie Rowland, Michelle Nash, Lisa Warden, Fiona Musgrove, Charles Walker MP, Vice-Chairman of HCC Dave Hewitt, Alan Nevill & Cleo Achilles.

Fiona Musgrove, Lisa Warden & Alan Nevill, Co-Founders of Four Swans Vision, also Michelle Nash and Cleo Achilles would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported this fab group.   From its humble beginnings of five people, membership is now almost touching 40.   Its  growth has been phenomenal.  Much of the success  originates  from the warm social environment Four Swans Vision creates.  Listening to members needs and careful planning of events.

For so many years eyesight loss was just placed as another disability.  The specific needs often meant  accessing theatres, cinemas, museums were    overlooked.  For example many of us love history and before would have enjoyed wandering around a museum learning about all the exhibits.  Now firmly locked behind glass doors with small labels they are lost.  However, FSV has shown this does not have to be the case.  Museum of London,

Barbican, provides private tours of its galleries by individual curators. Encouraging  touch to demonstrate various examples, colours described creating visualisation for VI visitors.  Visiting

Museum of London, Canary Wharf, an Object handling session was arranged.  This allowed the curator to explain, whilst touch of the object was allowed.  We learnt how to date clay pipes and all about the various artefacts  discovered on the Olympic Park archaeology site.  This was particularly relevant as many of us had

visited the park in Stratford,  a few months earlier.  Travelling around on the Olympic Park bus, we were described the various buildings and gained a perspective of how large the event would be.  This would never have been achieved through a television set or radio.  Some of our members have been trained in Emergency Life Support &  AED Defibrillator, and some other First Aid Courses.

Our largest success was delivering Hertfordshire's first ever Sports day for visually impaired people, last September.  60 children and adults enjoyed vi archery, vi football, goalball, vi cricket, vi tennis and swimming.  We would like to thank all

those involved in delivery of this event.  This includes VI Tennis Herts, Cambridge Dons, Ability Gateway, Alan and Helen Mawditt, Richard Hill and co, Potters Bar Additional Needs Tennis Group, Disabled Taught Sports, Jackie Sycamore, Janet

Warrington.  Also MP Charles Walker, Mayor Eddy Rowland, Mayoress June Rowland, Deputy Mayor Bren Perryman, Dee Hart Councillor who attended and Vice-Chairman of HCC Dave Hewitt who made a fab YouTube video of the event  which  is still receiving hits!!!  Other County Counsellors Chris Mitchell and Wilf  Eynon who supported the promotion and costs.  Grundy Park for allowing us use of the sports centre, CVS Broxbourne & East Herts, Guide Dogs, Herts Sports Partnership, Hoddesdon Rotary Club, Herts Young Mariners Base, the Special Olympics and Shaw Trust, Dan Maskell and many, many more.

Other FSV Events:

Thanks to Robert Gordon funding a mini bus took us to the seaside and a charity event,  earlier this month in Enfield -  where many of us enjoyed a good boogie!!!  We also met Nick De Bois, who was very interested in our project FSV Sensory Garden on Holmesdale Tunnel, WX.   We partnered with  Potters Bar Additional Needs Tennis to deliver our (still running) FSV VI tennis sessions at Grundy Park. Our youngest player is 18 and our most senior  aged player is 82!!!  This has been co funded by Dan Maskell Trust, Leo Tutt from Gosling through PBAN and Sylvia Adams Foundation.  We joined with Tottenham Hotspurs Foundation in supporting younger members.  Also Enfield Vision,  in some of their activities. 2013 aims to be as to be as vibrant. The creation of Hertfordshire's first  ever, Sensory Garden, designed and maintained by visually impaired people is launching this March.  As a joint project with Enfield, FSV Sensory Garden Outreach Project is to begin later in the year.  This is to highlight the needs of VI people demonstrated by gardening, also to help people to become more active and lead healthier lives.

Another success is our pilot of FSV Peer Mentoring Support Scheme,  for both VI people and carers.  Thanks to B3 Living and the Vice-Chairman of HCC Dave Hewitt  for their support.

Funding  from Sylvia Adams Foundation helped deliver three successful ceramic art workshops for

members in association with Pots of Imagination.  These taster sessions are due to form part of a larger programme for later this year.

Trips to Diggerland, Victoria and Albert Museum, cinema, Top Golf in Chigwell are all planned into this years activities so far.

Throughout the year we supported other events such as Amanda Byatt Care Foundation, HSB,  Guide Dogs for the Blind, RNIB Forums.

Behind every well run organisation is a host of dedicated people working to provide these activities.  Our sincerest thanks go to  the fab team of volunteers Four Swans Vision has been so fortunate to assemble.  Their hard work and dedication has grown this group in directions we never even dreamt of.  Our fantastic members

whose  ideas initiate these dreams and all those  funders who have made this possible.  We would also like to thank all at  The Mercury for  their support.  There is so much more need for Four Swans Vision in this area.

Please help us to make 2013 even bigger than 2012 in recognizing  the needs of visually impaired people X X X X

News Update 21/2/2013

Peer Mentoring Support Scheme

In response to needs of our members we are holding several sessions for both visually impaired people and their carers.   Each session lasts 1 and half hours and is conducted by a trained therapist in secure settings at Touchdown Offices courtesy of CVS.  In these small groups of VI people experiences are shared and understood.   In a separate session the role of a carer is shared within the same kind of setting.   Funding has been obtained by both vice chairman of HCC Dave Hewitt and B3 Living to keep the costs to a minimum.
The first session begins Monday 4 March and is delivered in three weekly sessions. Please get in touch to get more info.

 Talk at B3 Living

On Tuesday 26 February Fiona and Alan have been invited to speak at a Disability Forum held in Broxbourne by B3 Living explaining how this project has been designed and the work of Four Swans Vision in Hertfordshire.

Marathon on Sunday 9 June - St Albans

Through our new buddy runner scheme, we are supporting one of our members who is to  run this marathon in June.  Hertfordshire Society for the Blind is the main beneficiary of this event and it is great we are able to offer practical help towards it.

If you would like to take part or know more about our buddy runner please get in touch.

V I cycling

In Cambridge there is a VI cycling group.   Using tandems this is a very well supported activity.   If you would be interested in bringing this concept to Hertfordshire get in touch.

V I swimming

Last year we were contacted by a pilot project, in Enfield looking for VI participants.   Although take up was slow if anyone is still interested please get in touch.

Cambridge Dons Goalball Club

This activity is run every Friday night in Cambridge.  The guys and girls were fundamental in supporting our Sports day last year.   If you would like to have a go at this exciting game let us know.

V I Football

Run by Danny from Ability Gateway.  This is a great way of socialising with some really nice people.   Run at Stevenage it is hoped that there may be opportunities given in our local area  if there is enough interest.

V I archery

This is currently running at Gosling Center Hatfield.  There are plans to bring it into Grundy Park later this year for a few taster sessions.

Golf at Hertfordshire Golf Club

There is an opportunity to take place in a golf session when the weather improves.   Run by a golf pro on the putting green and ultimately the fairway it is a fantastic new activity for Four Swans Vision members to participate in.

V I Cricket

We have been contacted by Richard who demonstrated this sport at our Sports day. He is thinking about establishing a V I  cricket group at Grundy  Park.  All ages and abilities  are welcome.  This is due to begin later this year.

V I Tennis

This is running every Friday 12pm to 2pm at Grundy Park, Cheshunt.   Led by coaches from Potters Bar Additional Needs Tennis, it has been a huge success.   Suited to all eyesight conditions the game is adapted by use of sound balls  and smaller rackets.

Art Projects

Following the success of our association with Pots of Imagination  a larger project is planned for middle of this year.

This will incorporate more wet clay use. Ceramic painting and much more, see the Pots Of Imagination facebook page.
